SLNN Reporters Notebook – 1/18/2008
My recent article about businesses seeking clarity from Linden Lab has brought about a raft of reactions. There is a small group of people, primarily people who lost money in banks that are complaining and objecting to banks in Second Life. There is another small group of people who have profited from banks in Second Life, or who believe that banking contributes to the Second Life economy that are arguing in favor of banks in Second Life.
Another interesting minority are those who feel that they have been poorly served by Linden Lab and feel affinity with bankers and investors who seem to be getting similar treatment. This is summarized in:
First they came for the gamblers, but I don’t gamble, so it didn’t bother me.
Then, they came for the ageplayers, but I hadn’t discovered ageplay, so it didn’t bother me.
Then they came for the bankers, but I hadn’t set up a bank yet, so it didn’t bother me.
Then they came for the investors, but by then the alternative grids were viable and I had already left Second Life, so it didn’t bother me.
A lot of discussion has centered around the ‘God Paradox’ and Linden Lab’s approach to controversy which has been described as passive aggressive. People claim that Daniel Linden said LL keeps its policies deliberately vague because, "as soon as they draw a solid line, someone will walk up to the line, lean over it and spit over it." Details can be found in a video of Daniel Linden at http://slcreativity.org/blog/?p=32 (which I haven’t had a chance to view yet.)
Also, as more and more people become aware of my role at SLNN, I’m getting all kinds of interesting information. Please, keep the information coming. Not all of it is directly business related. For example, today, I am planning on attending Paulo Casaca’s presentation in Second Life.
Then, there are some interesting arts events coming up. As an example, today at 10 AM SLT in the Athena Isle Clubhouse, Thinkerer Melville, an arts patron in Second Life will hold a Community Builders Virtual Worlds meeting. On Saturday at 1 PM SLT, there will be a double gallery opening in the LBD village for Sky Hye and GM Nikolaidis.
Then, on the 25th, at 1 PM SLT, Timber Studios and the Not Too Hot Blues Club will be collaborating on an art show for Timber Waisman.
Plenty of excitement continues in Second Life. Keep your tips coming.
