ORMAN QUESTIONS LIEBERMAN’S PRIORITIES
Today, I received the following press release from John Orman, who has set up an exploratory committee to consider challenging Joe Lieberman in a Democratic Primary.
I am rushing off to other events, so I am posting this as is. Comments are, of course, welcome.
Dr. John Orman, Fairfield University Politics Professor announced today that he has begun the process of filling out the state and federal forms to establish the “Dr. John Orman: THE DEMOCRAT for U.S. Senate” committee.
Orman said, “After witnessing Senator Lieberman’s recent moral histrionics over the Schiavo case, I wonder why he showed no such moral outrage over the loss of life for over 1500 American military personnel in Iraq. We have now been involved militarily in Iraq from 1991 until today. This is longer than the U.S. was involved militarily in Vietnam!”
Orman said, “Why isn’t Lieberman questioning President Bush about his failure to capture Bin Laden. Bin Laden has been on the run longer than the amount of time it took the U.S. military to capture Adolph Hitler!” Orman said, “These issues are more important to our country than having a righteous Senator grandstanding over the personal, private, medical and legal decision of an American family.”

I am not a fan of Joe Lieberm
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 03/29/2005 - 17:11. span>I am not a fan of Joe Lieberman. Nonetheless, it should be pointed out that Dr Orman's "press release" is silly, shrill and inaccurate.
First, here's an excerpt from a transcript (according to NewsMax.com at http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2005/3/27/213955.shtml) of part of Senator Lieberman's interview on Meet the Press where he talked about the Schiavo case.
"These are very difficult decisions, but - of course, if you ask me what I would do if I was the Florida Legislature or any state legislature, I'd say that if somebody doesn't have a living will and the next of kin disagree on whether the person should be kept alive or that is whether food and water should be taken away and her life ended - that really the benefit of the doubt ought to be given to life."
In conclusion, Lieberman said, "The family member who wants to sustain her life ought to have that right because the judge really doesn't know, though he heard the facts, one judge, what Terri Schiavo wanted. He made a best guess based on the evidence before him. That's not enough when you're talking about aggressively removing food and water to end someone's life."
Far from being "moral histrionics," I think the Senator's comments are reasoned and thoughtful. (Regardless of whether or not one agrees with his point of view.)
Second, trying to link the Schiavo controversy with the death of soldiers in Iraq is asinine.
Lastly, Hitler was not captured by the U.S. He committed suicide while Russian troops closed in on Berlin. Potential candidates for U.S. Senate (much less college professors such as Dr. Orman) should, hopefully, be aware of this bit of 20th century history. For that matter, they might be able to check the correct spelling of such a significant historical figure's name before using it in a press release. (It's Adolf, not Adolph.)

I call bullshit on TC

You took the only fairly sane thing Lieberman said in the interview and made it seem like that was the whole thing.did you forget "america itsellf is a faith based initiative".Did you forget that the judge ruled that having the tube removed was what TERRI herself wanted and that her parents said even if that were true they would not respect her wishes.
As far as the rest of your comment goes its GARBAGE.The US military ALLOWED the Russians to take Berlin because of the massive casualties they suffered and I think you can be captured both DEAD or ALIVE.
Google Adolph Hitler and you'll see that EITHER spelling is totally acceptable in academia.
Let's focus on issues
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Sat, 04/02/2005 - 14:56. span>Hopefully, we can stay away from name calling as well it nitpicking about how to spell a name. We need to focus on issues. Is the current U.S. foreign policy doing as good a job as possible at defending us against terrorism? If not, walk could make the policy better? Is Senator Lieberman doing the most possible to bring about the best policies? How about for domestic policies?
Let's focus on that, and not on how to spell people's names or calling people names.
bacon on the hill - time to come home

Citing NewsMax is ideologically revealing
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 07/13/2005 - 22:52. span>I just want to point out that NewsMax is a far right wing media outlet. You're showing your red Republican colors by citing that source, TC. It's very telling that Joseph Lieberman's greatest supporters are the Republicans.
A big THANK YOU to John Orman for challenging Joe Lieberman, who is indeed out of touch with the Democratic Party.
Truth of the matter
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 08/22/2006 - 13:39. span>John Orman is just a sore loser and he is taking out his anger on Lieberman by attempting to thwart the political process by taking away more choice. This is a clear sign that the Democrats are afraid they are going to lose the election either to or because of Lieberman. They are afraid of challenge, just like when Nader ran against Bush and Gore in the 2000 election. I guess choice is supposed to be good for a womans body, but not for strong political challengers.
By the way, I am tired of both the Republican and Democrat parties as they have basically ignored their constituents needs and have been too corrupted by lobbyists and special interest groups. They also are more concerned with getting re-elected than doing the job they were elected to do.
By the way, how come the Democrat party is not screaming to kick that warmonger Hillary Clinton out of their party? Probably because she is their only chance to win in '08.
