Connecticut Democratic Delegate Selection
Over the past several days, I’ve received emails from and about various friends seeking to become delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Denver this summer. From these emails, the list of Delegate Caucus locations started to emerge. Since then, the Connecticut Democratic Party has produced this list of Delegate Caucus locations. It provides additional useful information. All the caucuses will take place at 7:30 on Wednesday March 19th. It is a good idea to arrive early, since they are likely to lock the doors at 7:30.
In the First Congressional District, the Clinton caucus will take place at Windsor Town Hall, 275 Broad St, Windsor, CT. Adam Wood will be the temporary chair. Adam Wood had been Diane Farrell’s campaign manager, and has gone on to become Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch’s chief of staff.
The Clinton Caucus in the First will be selecting three delegates. One person running for delegate is Leo Canty. Leo has been Executive Secretary of the CT AFL-CIO since 1996, is Second Vice President of AFT CT. He is Chairman of the board of the Connecticut Health Foundation.
The Obama Caucus in the First will take place at the West Hartford Town Hall Auditorium on 50 Main Street in West Hartford. Tim Brennan will be the temporary chair. Tim is a member of the West Hartford Town Council and was a key volunteer in Ned Lamont’s U.S. Senate bid.
One person running for delegate is Jason Paul. Jason is a student at Brandeis and worked extensively on Diane Farrell’s campaign. Jason has set up a Facebook page to gather support for his bid to be a delegate.
In the Second Congressional District, Gloria Collins will be the temporary chair for the Clinton Caucus which will take place at the Colechester Elementary School, 315 Halls Hill Road in Colechester. You should enter via William Johnson School at 360 Norwich Avenue. Gloria is a member for the Connecticut Democratic State Central Committee.
The Obama Caucus will also take place in Colechester. It will be in the Bacon Academy Auditorium on 611 Norwich Avenue. Lon Seidman will be the temporary chair. Lon was a delegate at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and did some blogging from there. He is Co-President of the CT Young Dems and was Joe Courtney’s campaign manager in 2006.
In the Third Congressional District, Nan Birdwhistle will be the temporary chair for the Clinton Caucus. It will take place at Fairhaven School at 169 Grand Avenue in New Haven. She is the former three term First Selectwoman of Woodbridge, CT and has been an important supporter of John DeStefano and Joe Lieberman.
The Obama caucus will take place in the Hill Career High School Auditorium at 140 Legion Avenue in New Haven. Susie Voigt will be the temporary chair. She is the chair of the New Haven Democratic Party. Jen Just is one of the people running to become an Obama delegate in the third congressional district. Jen was very active as a grassroots supporter of Gov. Dean in 2004 and has done a great deal of grassroots work on behalf of the Obama campaign in this cycle.
Jen writes that the doors will open at 6:30 with a mini-phonebank and opportunity to visit with friends. Also on the slate is New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, State Senator Martin Looney, and State Representative Toni Walker. She comments about the slate,
I think it says a lot about the Obama campaign that they have chosen at least one grassroots organizer from each of the Congressional Districts for their delegate slates, and aside from the fact that I am so honored and thrilled to have been chosen, I think making sure grassroots folks are part of the process in Denver is a very important message to send to the Democratic Party. The Obama candidacy if nothing else is about moving beyond politics as usual in this country, and giving the people back their voices and their votes.
In the Fourth Congressional District, the Clinton Caucus will take place at the Stamford Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd. Donna King will be the temporary chair. Donna is a former State Central Committee Member and former chair of the Norwalk Democratic Town Committee.
The Obama Caucus will also take place in Stamford. They will meet at the Elks Lodge on 33 Mission Street. Stuart Wells will be the temporary chair. Stuart is the husband of Galen Wells, the current chair of the Norwalk Democratic Town Committee.
Clinton Caucus in the Fifth Congressional District will meet at the Elks Club on 346 Main Street in Danbury, CT. Joe Walkovich will be the temporary chair. Joe is a former State Representative and was an important Lieberman supporter and lobbyist for James Galante. Galante ran a trash hauling company in the Danbury area and has been indicted on 93-counts of federal racketeering.
The Obama Caucus in the Fifth Congressional District will meet at the Washington Middle School Auditorium at 1225 North Broad Street in Meriden. John McNamara will be the temporary chair. John is the Democratic Town Committee Chair in New Britain and was a significant supporter of Ned Lamont.
The campaigns have their slates for delegates and it is unlikely that there will be any surprises coming out of the caucuses. However, the caucuses should be fun; a great time to meet people very active in politics, and perhaps get a chance to have a little say. I hope everyone gets to an appropriate caucus in their congressional districts.
