"The Net. He thinks he’s entangled in a net."
(One of Pozzo’s lines in Waiting for Godot.)
The other day, I quoted another line of Pozzo’s in Waiting for Godot. It was about meeting new people along our way, and I talked about it terms of blogging. Colin, one of those people I’ve recently met along the way, pointed to it today, and it caused me to return to waiting to Godot.
Pozzo’s departing line is, “They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more.” I am struggling with a difficult work issue right now. This afternoon, Kim came upstairs saying that the water heater was leaking. Actually, it was the pipe leading from the radiators to the furnace, so we are without heat right now.
My sleep has been erratic, so these bleak thoughts resonate.
(To sleep, perchance to dream.)
So, "What do we do now, ... while waiting"? We could blog. "It'll pass the time."
Yet in contrast to that, I read Tom’s blog entry, ‘Work Like A Baby’. Tom is actually a neighbor of mine, at least according to Feedmap. I haven’t actually met him, but I’ve commented on his blog before.
He says, “Workplaces that can encourage childlike behavior will create enormous advantage as young workers increasingly become disenchanted with the either/or of work/fun, passion/money. Joy will become the new ‘six sigma’”. He points to a blog entry, Follow the Fun, which explores this even further.
Just over a year ago, I wrote, this blog entry about following your passion. Another year has passed and the money hasn’t followed. I read blog posts like Tom, Doug and Howard’s about following the fun and I hope they are right. I hope something happens to get me through what looks like it could be a long cold and dark winter.
Colin’s students have a great exercise for the coming week. Colin writes, “I don't know EXACTLY what the theme is, just what I want you to read and think about, until we DO know what the theme is”. Well, perhaps that gets to some of it. It is about Emergence. The human condition is to read and think until we do know what the theme is. It is what we do while waiting, and blogs are yet another place where we read, write and think, while waiting.
