Albright 08, Farrell 06

No, it’s not a sports score, it is a cutsey title to sum up my experiences last night.
Next Monday, the 23rd, marks the ninth anniversary of Madeleine Albright’s swearing in as the 64th Secretary of State to the United States. She has close ties to Connecticut, having gotten her BA from Wellesley College. Her daughter and son-in-law lived in Stamford when they gave birth to her first grandchild. She is an intelligent woman of great stature.
So, it is little surprise that she spent last night in Westport talking to a group of around 100 people about how we can address grave foreign policies issues that face our country. Her first recommendation was that we need to work together to elect Diane Farrell to be our next Congresswoman in the 4th CD.
She talked about North Korea. She is the highest-ranking U.S. official to meet with North Korea’s President, Kim Jong-il. She spoke about the Middle East and the dangers to peace there. She spoke about developments in Latin America.
She also spoke about her brief meeting with President Bush and noted that when she was Secretary of State, she regularly conferred with former Secretaries of State, independent of their party affiliation, a practice that the Bush administration has forgotten.
If it weren’t for one troubling issue, I would have been ready to unfurl an Albright 08 banner then and there. Unfortunately, she was not born in the United States and cannot currently run.
If we can’t elect Secretary Albright as President, the least we can do is elect smart leaders that will listen to people like Secretary Albright. So, while Albright 08 doesn’t seem possible, it makes Farrell 06 all the more important.
