Blogger conference call with Chris Murphy

This afternoon, Chris Murphy had a conference call with bloggers to announce his new Web Video. He spoke briefly about how they made the video. It was not scripted out but was simply him talking extemporaneously to the camera. There was a desire to not be cookie cutter.
Key messages of the video are to talk about Chris’ deep connection with the district and to focus on the positive. All of this comes in the context of MoveOn’s advertisements and Nancy Johnson’s attacks on Chris.
Chris spoke a lot about the importance of the stem cell research bill which he co-sponsored. The bill had bi-partisan support, including both Democrat and Republican co-sponsors. He spoke about it being symbolic of the sort of things that government can do right.
His hope is that over the next few weeks information about the video will be spread widely via the blogs and email. The campaign is looking towards a revitalization of the website and the blog. Chris pointed out how his campaign was one of the first to get a blog up, but as the campaign picked up speed, there wasn’t as much focus on the blog as they would like. As part of this revitalization, Chris will be actively participating with the blog as well as continuing to reach out to bloggers and the netroots. Chris commented that the campaign wants to use the online community as a place showcase ideas.
He noted that he was one of the younger candidates running and that he wants to participate in how younger people are communicating these days.
We ended off the discussion talking about the importance of moving politics from the thirty-second sound bite to more of a conversation which doesn’t dumb down the discussion but engages people in working together to find multi-systemic solutions to the problems we face.
It sure looks like Chris is running the sort of campaign that I hope bloggers, other politicians and especially the voters take notice of. It is a campaign of by and for the people.
