Connecticut State Senate passes Death Penalty Repeal
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Fri, 05/22/2009 - 07:05This morning, at 4:11, the CT State Senate narrowly voted to repeal the Death Penalty in Connecticut and replace it with life in prison without opportunity for release. While many bloggers stayed up late to watch the debate, including some great live blogging at Gideon’s Trumpet, many of us went to bed long before the vote and only heard the results via traditional media sources.
It was a narrow vote in the Senate, and I’m extremely disappointed that my own Senator, Joe Crisco, voted against the bill, as did Senator Gayle Slossberg of Milford. Other Democrats voting against the bill included Sen. Donald DeFronzo, Sen. Paul Doyle and Senator Thomas Gaffney. One of the Republican’s most faithful Senators, who lists herself as a Democrat, Sen. Joan Hartley also voted against the bill.
Many of us wondered during the debate where the church was on this. It seems as if some are very eager to rally against marriage equality, or against provisions to make it easier to hold church officials accountable for misdoings, but when it comes to the Death Penalty, we don’t hear much from the church.
Like Gov. Rell, I’m an Episcopalian, so I’ll refer to our church’s position on the Death Penalty. In 1988, the Lambdeth Conference passed Resolution 33, which “Urges the Church to speak out against…all governments who practice capital punishment”. Gov. Rell should respect the position of the church on this issue and sign the bill repealing the Death Penalty. However, most people do not expect this to happen.

#followfriday
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Thu, 05/21/2009 - 19:03@ct94dem @ctblogger @gideonstrumpet @ctnewsjunkie @heddahfeddah– The Death Penalty Debate.
True, it isn’t Friday here in Connecticut yet, but it is in other parts of the world it is, and on Friday, people on Twitter and some blogs list people that they follow that they think others should follow as well. So, this evening, there is a very important discussion going on. The Connecticut State Senate is debating whether or not the death penalty should be replaced with life in prison with no opportunity for release. It passed the Connecticut House and now the Senators are debating it.
@ct94dem is State Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield, who has done a great job in arguing for abolition of the death penalty. He has also done a great job of engaging in dialog on Twitter and Facebook. He is adding his comments to the debate.
@ctblogger is not on Twitter as much as @ct94dem, but he is one of the key forces behind MyLeftNutmeg. He also does great stuff with video and this evening he tweeted. CTBlogger has said that he can't wait to make a video compilation of Sen. Kissel's ramblings in support of the death penalty. I commented that I can’t wait to see that video.
I’m a big fan of informed debate, but I’m not finding anything informed about Sen. Kissel’s ramblings.
Joining the online discussion is @gideonstrumpet. I’ve never met @gideonstrumpet, but I’ve talked with him on Twitter and I greatly respect his blog, A Public Defender. He has a lot of good comments and is living blogging the debate on his site.
@ctnewsjunkie saves most of her writing for the online news site, CT News Junkie. However, she’s added a couple tweets, noting that the debate started at 5:30 and the Republicans have offered 26 amendments to the bill.
@heddahfeddah is also joining in the discussion. She writes a lot of good stuff about what is going on in Hartford, both in Twitter as well as on her site, Urban Compass.
With all of this, there is a lively discussion about the death penalty taking place on Twitter, and the blogs. Consider following these people for a clearer view of what is happening at the Capitol.
Obituary for an Unknown Heroine
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Tue, 05/19/2009 - 18:41Yesterday, I was told of a sad loss for our community. A ninety-nine year old woman whom I don’t believe I ever met passed away recently. I don’t know if she ever came to the town I live in, and I’m don’t even know her full name, but she has had an important influence on my life.
When we moved to Woodbridge, everyone told us what a wonderful superintendent Dr. Guy Stella was. Over the past two years, I’ve gotten to know Dr. Stella as I attended school board meetings, technology meetings at the school, parent teacher organization meetings and numerous other events. I told him about Fiona’s radio show and he asked her to come down to his office and tell him about the show. He has made Beecher Road School a much better place and I am grateful to him for this.
Once, I had the opportunity to ask him if he would call into Fiona’s show. I explained that it was every Sunday at 6:30. He said that he would love to, but that every Sunday he goes to visit his mother. I suggested that his mother should call in, and thought about how great it would be for students at Beecher Road to hear stories about the childhood of their beloved superintendent.
Unfortunately, I have been told that Dr. Stella’s mother passed away recently. She will not get a chance to call into Fiona’s radio show. I won’t get a chance to meet or talk with her. However, she must have been a remarkable woman to have a son turn out so wonderfully.
My condolences go out to Dr. Stella and his entire family. As we take a moment to pause and reflect, I think it is important to think about the effect we all may have, not only on those that we spend a lot of time with, our family and friends, but also the indirect effect our lives may have on people we never meet, the way I am sure Dr. Stella’s mother has had an important effect on children in many places where Dr. Stella has worked.
Woodbridge Town Meeting Approves Purchase of Country Club
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Mon, 05/18/2009 - 21:12After close to an hour and a half of discussion, citizens of Woodbridge at a town meeting voted 435 to 34 to approve the purchase of the Woodbridge Country Club.
The town hopes to close on the property around June 15th and hopes the club will be open soon afterwards.
Initially, the club will be managed by an outside manager. There will be yearly memberships for golf as well as for pool and tennis. Members of the town and people who were members of the club in good standing at the time of the sale will be able to purchase memberships at a 20% discount.
The club will also be open for usage on a day by day basis.
Stories I’m Following: Dodd, HB 6604, Sotomayor, Thomson, etc.
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Mon, 05/18/2009 - 17:32There is a lot going on in politics right now at the same time as plenty of technology and personal developments are coming, so while I watch the stories develop, I thought I would provide a quick glimpse of some of what’s happening.
Dodd Challengers
I recently had a brief opportunity to speak with Roger Pearson. Roger is former First Selectman of Greenwich who is exploring the possibility of challenging Sen. Dodd in a Democratic Primary. He has been assembling the pieces to put together a credible challenge to Sen. Dodd and is expected to speak to the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee on Thursday. Key talking points are likely to include a focus on how the financial services industry is regulated. Mr. Pearson expressed concern about the repeal of Glass-Steagall and the need for meaningful campaign finance reform for U.S. Congressional elections.
Meanwhile, The Hill has a blog post about Merrick Alpert considering a run against Dodd despite a less than enthusiastic comment from his former boss “Joe Pelto”, more commonly known in Connecticut as Jon Pelto.
HB 6604
A few days ago, I wrote about the future of Public Access Television in Connecticut. One person pointed me to a request for a Declaratory Ruling regarding the Public Access interconnection between Cox Communications and AT&T. There is also a story going around that AT&T is trying to get the unions to oppose HB 6604 by suggesting that HB 6604 would cause AT&T to pull its video services out of Connecticut, causing further job loss. AT&T is currently facing difficult labor relations as noted in a New Haven Independent article about a rally for AT&T jobs.
Sotomayor
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about Judge Sotomayor and the Doninger v. Niehoff ruling. Last week, the New Haven Register wrote an article about Judge Sotomayor and Ricci v. DeStefano. It will be interesting to watch how closely the decisions of various potential Supreme Court Justices are analyzed in online.
Mel Thompson
Mel Thompson is a Mayoral candidate in Derby, CT the blogger behind Derby Politics. The New Haven Register had an article about his computer being seized in a raid. In his blog, Mr. Thompson writes “Yes the person who made the false claims against me that led to the police coming over was Sam Rizzitelli.” Samuel Rizzitelli is the chair of the Derby Democratic Town Committee. According to Mr. Thompson, Mr. Rizzitelli allegation was extortion. The details remain sketchy but according to the New Haven Register,
Thompson alleged that the individual who filed the complaint with police had made a disparaging comment about him, and Thompson then threatened to sue for defamation. According to Thompson, the complainant asked him to draft a settlement agreement to resolve that issue, in which that person would pay Thompson $500.
I am particularly interested to watch the outcome of this for a few different reasons. One is that I’m concerned about Democratic politics in towns near Woodbridge. Another is to see how it might relate to issues of defamation and blogs.
Random Other Stuff
A while ago, I wrote about the Cat Farms of Florida. As an update, the special exemption that Haven Acres Cat Sanctuary had requested was approved by the County Commissioner, but it looks like there will be additional legal battles yet to come.
I’ve also been following the case of Rep James O’Rourke. A few weeks ago, there was a rumor that prosecutors were reviewing an arrest warrant where Rep. O’Rourke would be charged with negligent homicide in the death of a woman he had given a ride to. Rep. O’Rourke was suspended from his leadership position in the House Democratic Caucus based on this rumor. However, I have heard nothing further on the case.
These are some of the stories here in Connecticut that I’m keeping an eye on. What about you? Got any information on any of these? Are there other things I should be watching?
