Book Recommendations?

A little over a month ago, on a Blog Explosion blog, Psych Grad Mama asked for some book recommendations. I listed some of my favorites here.

Now, I'm asking for recommendations from the rest of you for a good book for me to read.

Saturday Morning

From my horoscope today:

"You thought you knew what you wanted, so why is it so hard to make up your mind? If you seem to be veering between multiple personalities, it's only the Stars pushing your buttons."

Well, that fits well. I am being torn in a million different directions right now. My eldest daughter has just left to head back to college. It was great to see her, and I am so pleased about how school is going for her. However, I worry about how to continue to pay for her education, the education of her sisters, keep the house, etc. etc.

Thanksgiving 2004

As the war wages on across the seas, and our economy continues to suffer from record trade and budget deficits, as the rich get richer and the rest of us have harder and harder times struggling to get by and as the solutions to the problems of our country and our world seem further and further way, it is useful to stop and think about what we can be thankful for.

Our medical system is in crisis. The ranks of the uninsured continue to grow. Doctors are getting pressured by insurance providers on what gets covered and what gets paid for, while at the same time having to deal with ever increasing malpractice costs. It is becoming more and more difficult for seniors to make ends meet and cover their medical needs.

Thanksgiving Eve

I woke in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep. I spent some time surfing Blog Explosion, and catching up on my emails.

Today was not especially productive. I did spend some time working with the new version of CivicSpace, and played a little with Media Wiki.

A Question of Values

(Originally published in Greater Democracy)

The phrase, “A Question of Values” reminds me of something from my college days, a symposium or something like that. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Whatever it was, it seems as if “A Question of Values” is something we need to thinking about.

At Wooster, I started off a religion major and ended up becoming a philosophy major. Back then, I read a wide spectrum of magazines about Christianity from Christian Century, to Christianity Today to Sojourners.

As people start talking about the ‘moral values’ that some polls say was such an important aspect of the past election, I was interested to read this article in Sojourners. It has a good exploration into what people really think about ‘moral values’, aided by this poll from Zogby.
