Catching Up
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Thu, 01/19/2006 - 15:42Between travels, internet outages and so on, I’ve been way behind in my reading and writing, so let me take a few moments to catch up on interesting things going on online and provide additional commentary.
World Changing, a blog that I really enjoy, has a couple particularly interesting articles up right now. One is Turning Emissions Into Fuel With Algae. The idea is to harvest CO2 emissions and grow algae which could be used as a biofuel. Well worth the read.
Another interesting article they have is New Tool for Making Vaccines. The idea here is to use the Tobacco Mosaic Virus ‘to introduce new genes to tobacco plants without using transgenic modification’. The purpose would be to quickly to make large amounts of usable antigens for the creation of vaccines.
Searching Google
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Thu, 01/19/2006 - 10:25I’ve always been interested in Google searches. They can drive a lot of traffic to your site, and for unexpected reasons. My blog entry, ”I've always wanted a smoking jacket!” has brought over 5,000 people to my site. Toomre.com is getting a lot of hits on people searching for information about Anshul Rustagi, the CDO trader recently dismissed from Deutsche Bank.
So, the news that the Feds are after Google data as highlighted in Richard’s Notes caught me interest.
Reflections on Ned Lamont’s appearance on Connecticut Local Politics.
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Wed, 01/18/2006 - 21:35This is my summarized digest of Ned Lamont’s appearance on Connecticut Local Politics. To see the full set of comments, visit http://connecticutlocalpolitics.blogspot.com/2006/01/ned-lamont-qa.html
First and foremost, I am very glad that Ned Lamont showed up and participated in a good give and take. I firmly believe that these sort of discussions are crucial in strengthening democracy in our country. Whether or not in the end he decides to run, he has already done an important service in encouraging debate about the issues that matter.
Low energy
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Wed, 01/18/2006 - 14:38A strong wind howled outside this morning. Miranda came back from the bus stop after waiting for half an hour. The bus hadn’t shown up. I drove her over to school, only to find roads blocked by downed trees. Finally, she got to school, half an hour later. The trip home was long as well.
When I got home, I noticed that one of the large pine trees had its top half blown off. As I walked around the yard, I found that the copper beach, one of the beautiful old trees on our property had lost a very large branch. In both cases what had come down was larger than other full-grown trees. I am saddened about the damage to the copper beach.
More Random Stuff
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Tue, 01/17/2006 - 15:27My Internet connection is still down at home. It came up briefly last night, long enough to get out the queued up emails that I had written and to receive those waiting for me. I’ve read through a bunch of them and have more emails queued up.
The Caffeinated Geek Girl writes about ” a friend who's 18 year old daughter has been battling Leukemia for over a year”. She has a pointer to the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry. I would also like to highlight the National Marrow Donor Program as well as their Center for Cord Blood.
