Fighting poverty one click at a time

Today, I received an email about GoodSearch. It is a search engine that contributes a penny to a charity of your choice every time you use them for a websearch.

After checking around a little bit, I’ve set my charity of choice to One.Org. (Not to be confused with One America Committee). So, every time I do a search, a penny will go to One.Org, The Campaign to Make Poverty History.

I use Firefox as my web browser, and so I’ve set the little search box in the upper right hand corner, which I use all the time, to default to GoodSearch. I use that search box a lot, so I suspect that my searches are going to add up. I’ve also just set up my wife’s computer to use GoodSearch and contribute to Habitat for Humanity.

Are you using GoodSearch? Which charity are you contributing to?

I sent out an email to a technology list for non-profits and I got the following responses:

We have been using Goodsearch and building our pennies for LemonAid Fund, which is a very small all volunteer, non-profit that is working primarily in Sierre Leone. www.lemonaidfund.org. Feel free to donate your searches to us! You can also change your charity if you choose to. LemonAid Fund originated in Chicago. There is no formal office structure or employees as we operate primarily on volunteers in Sierre Leone. LF is currrently building a school, providing small amounts for micro-loans, classes for adults, etc. As we develop programming in SL, we always make it self-sustaining. A village group picks up the concept and determines ways that the initial idea can be made
culturally sensitive self sustaining so that they can keep it going once the seed money is gone. I am always so impressed with the creativeness of the people there. So if you want to help kids and families in Sierre Leone build their own school, we would love any assistance we can get. We still have some fundraising to do to complete building the school. You can sponsor a classroom, a floor or a brick! Just let us know your interest.

So far so good with Goodsearch. The search engine is yahoo and is fairly good. Occassionally I can't find something with it and then will turn to an alternative but 9 times out of 10 I use Goodsearch.

LemonAid Fund and GoodSearch

First, thanks for posting the piece on LemonAid Fund. Second, the pennies do add up and make a difference especially for smaller not-for-profits. As of today, 6 months, into using goodsearch LemonAid Fund has raised approximately $49.13 with a handful of people. That means that 1 child can recieve a scholarship for 1/2 a year of school in Sierra Leone!! It only takes 10,000 searches total to send her to school for a year Currently, 98% of all of our revenue goes directly into programs. So the more people who use www.goodsearch.com the better and if you select "I'm supporting" LemonAid Fund (Highland Park, IL) well, we'll be thrilled and so will a child in Sierra Leone. nancy@lemonaidfund.org
