Homeless Children, International
A key phrase of the DeStefano campaign is ‘Expect More’. He talks about how the only thing that people in Connecticut expect to be number one at is college basketball. We need to expect more in terms of economic development, protecting our environment and open spaces, caring for the health of everyone and so on.
With this as a backdrop to my thinking, I went to church on Sunday. The church we go to is in backcountry Greenwich, one of the wealthiest areas in our country. Megan White, who grew up in Greenwich, went to a top class private school in there and then went on to Harvard, was the guest minister. She is a missionary in Kenya with Homeless Children International. She spoke about how people brought up in backcountry Greenwich have great potential. They have had every opportunity to get the best education and make the best connections. They have learned social graces, but are they living up to their potential. Yes, many of them go on to major roles in business or government, but are they living up to what God would have them do.
Megan is.
She is working in Kenya with kids who have grown up on the street, who never would have expected to graduate from middle school, let alone college, but the program she is working with has helped many kids get into high school and college. It has helped children achieve more than they ever could have expected.
It is times like these that I wish I was making my old Wall Street Salary and could write a large check to Homeless Children International. Yet struggling to get by working with startups and writing for various blogs, I need to find other ways of helping. Hopefully, this blog post will be a help and will encourage others to contribute.
Sunday also saw the article in the Greenwich Time about blogging. It was in the back of my mind as I listened to Megan. I thought about trucandygirl the Proud U.S. Marines Wife whose blog I promote every chance I get. She has given me, and I hope many others, a view into the lives of those that serve. I thought about Global Voices Online, an effort by Rebecca MacKinnon, Ethan Zuckerman and others to get voices from other countries more clearly heard in the United States. I thought about BloggerCorps, an effort to help groups like Homeless Children International use blogs to get their message out.
I remember the letters that people get when they sponsor children though groups like Homeless Children International and I thought, wouldn’t it be wonderful if some of the children at the school in Kenya could blog about their experiences. Megan spoke about the devotions that the children lead. What a ministry it would be if some of those devotions were available online.
Would Homeless Children International be interested in using blogs to help spread their message? Do I have time to help with yet another project? I don’t know, but it is worth investigating. I hope everyone who reads this also takes time to think about how they can reach a higher potential and help out groups like Homeless Children International.
Has Mayor DeStefano looked in
Submitted by John-JT on Tue, 05/10/2005 - 12:32. span>Has Mayor DeStefano looked into the childhood hunger rate in Conneticut? And what does he plan to do to stem the tide of hunger amongst this young and vulnerable population? Their best chance of overcoming poverty is through proper education, nutrition and health care.
Give everyone my best,
JT
