Unions had their place getting workers safe working conditions and a fairly decent wage. Now all they do is suck money from their membership and make demands, causing the products made to be sold at elevated prices. Several years ago I was able to see first hand union workers building a new building and was dismayed to find that where one craftsman was needed three were required by the union. I and my fellow IT workers would go in at night and install wiring in order to meet deadlines. Good thing the union never caught us or they would have cut the cables and put an inflatable rat outside.

While it might not seem that there is a place for unions anymore based on your experience, the need for workers to get and keep safe working conditions and decent wages remains extremely important, particularly in the clothing industry.
Union clothing shops are being closed down in the United States as well as in other countries and jobs are going to workers in poor paying shops with unsafe working conditions.
Please, be careful about generalizing about unions as a whole based on specific instances in specific industries.
