Adoption
I’m tired. I was up late last night, and then Kim called this morning while I was still sleeping. Perhaps this makes me a little more sensitive than usual. So, as I worked on my notes for me session on tracking the local blogosphere for the New Organizing Institute, I stumbled across this blog and got horribly distracted.
Dawit is a young boy from Ethiopia that a couple here in Connecticut has just adopted. It is a wonderful blog. Please take a little time to read it. It is written by GaiaGal. (See earlier posts here.)
It provides a wonderful counter point to efforts to ban people from adopting children. However, I did hear about a new plan that puts this all in proper perspective. State Sen. Robert Hagan of Youngstown, Ohio has sent around an email to his fellow State Senators looking for co-sponsors to a bill that would “would ban households with one or more Republican voters from adopting children or acting as foster parents”. He cites “credible research” that adopted children raised by Republicans are at greater risk to develop “emotional problems, social stigmas, inflated egos, and alarming lack of tolerance for others they deem different than themselves and an air of overconfidence to mask their insecurities.”

Of course this is a bill mocking a similar bill introduced eight conservative Republicans in Ohio to ban gay couples from adopting children.
I am happy for and his new family. I am amused by and proud of Sen. Hagan for his humorous way of dealing with those who attempt to thwart the love and joy that people can find in adoption.
