Extreme Democracy

Last year, I wrote a chapter for the book Extreme Democracy. My chapter, like several others, dealt with DeanSpace. DeanSpace has now evolved into CivicSpace, and is being used for many non-profits, campaigns, and even businesses. Two examples that are particularly important to me are DeStefano for CT, and Toomre Capital Markets.

The book has been available for download for quite a while. Now it is available as a book at http://www.lulu.com/content/125298. Pick up a copy today!

A tale of two Mayors

(Written on the train into the city yesterday, but posted Saturday afternoon).

It is Friday morning and I am on the train into New York City. It is cool and cloudy today. I had been expecting nicer weather. Perhaps it will turn nice for Mother’s day.

On the train, I read the Stamford Advocate’s coverage of Mayor Malloy’s exoneration. I am pleased. Mayor Malloy has been a great mayor and would be a great governor. Some people have suggested that allegations from an unknown source were a political hatchet job. It sure looks that way to me.

Republican Town Committee Chairman Daniel McCabe is quoted as saying “I certainly wouldn’t consider it a badge of honor that something that intense and dramatic had to take place in the city of Stamford.” In a sense, he is right, and if he has an integrity, he would denounce the person who sent the chief state’s attorney’s office on a wild goose chase and would actively work to have that person exposed.

Youth Rights Media

(Originally posted on the DeStefano for CT blog)

I joined the DeStefano campaign for many reasons. I like his policies and the way he has thought them out. I like his willingness to engage in dialog about what is best for New Haven and for Connecticut. I like his willingness to explore new media to get the message across, and I like his call on all of us to expect more of ourselves and our state.

Yesterday, I received an email from Fernando J. Muñiz of the Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance about the film, CJT$: At What Cost? The film was produced by Youth Rights Media.

Blogmaster for DeStefano

A year ago, my eldest daughter worked as a volunteer on Dan Malloy's gubernatorial campaign. It was part of a school project where she was supposed to get real world experience. Mayor Malloy is a good person whom I think would make a great governor.

During my wife's campaign, we often ran into Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz. Some people have warned us against her brashness while others have suggested it is exactly this what is needed to win back the Governor office. Kim and I have gotten along well with Ms. Bysiewicz and I believe she would be a great governor as well.

Meanwhile, everyone is waiting to see is Chris Dodd or Richard Blumenthal will throw their hats in the ring. Kim and I have also run into them on the campaign trail and have a lot of respect for them.

However, many of the people whom I respect politically are very excited about Mayor John DeStefano's campaign. Several have suggested that I talk with the Major, and so the other day, I drove up to New Haven to talk with him. On the way up, I was passed by a car with license plate 6; Dick Blumenthal on his way up to Hartford.

Bankruptcy

There has been a lot of talk about bankruptcy recently. A bill is winding its way through congress that would make things even more difficult for people facing bankruptcy. Recently, a friend asked me how I was doing and I quipped that I haven't declared bankruptcy yet, although if the current legislation is going to go through, perhaps I should do it soon. Having spent the past couple years working as a volunteer on various political campaigns, doing work for not for profit, and spending a lot of time with startups that have yet to establish sufficient cash flow to be self-sustaining, my finances are a bit tight.
