#ff #hcsmct @CTHealth @ctdph @CHCConnecticut @HealthJusticeCT @cshhc @CTHealthCenters @CTVoices @WCGMemorialFund
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Fri, 09/30/2011 - 21:19Earlier today, @CTHealth tweeted about these groups being people that do #hcsmct right. It actually reflects an important discussion I’ve been in this week and I was glad to see the tweet and use it as a starting point for my follow Friday blog post.
For those who haven’t read my follow Friday blog posts, I list my suggestions for the week, and then provide some thoughts on why I’ve suggested them.
I use Twitterfeed to pull the blog post and create a tweet, so it will go up on Twitter, with a link back to the blog. Nice, easy, and automated.
For those who aren’t acquainted with the hashtag #ff, that is follow Friday, a means of sharing information about who you think is worth following.
#hcsmct is a newly concocted hashtag. There is a hashtag, #hcsm for Health Care Social Media. Different groups use variations of the #hcsm hashtag for their area, so some of us have talked about #hcsmct for people doing social media for health care issues in Connecticut.
@CTHealth is the Connecticut Health Foundation, a very important group dealing with health issues in Connecticut. @CTDPH is the Connecticut Department of Public Health. It is great to see a state agency making strong use of Twitter. They are now just a few followers away from the 2000 mark.
@CHCConnecticut is the Community Health Center, headquartered in Middletown with sites across the state. I am their social media manager. @HealthJusticeCT is a group focusing on raising awareness of and addressing health disparities in Connecticut. I’ve had some great discussions with people from @HealthJusticeCT.
@cshhc is Cornell Scott Hill Health Center in New Haven. The are a community health center, like CHC is and it is great to see them using Twitter.
@CTHealthCenters is the association of community health centers in Connecticut. I’ve spoken a little bit with people there and it is great to see them on Twitter as well.
@CTVoices is Connecticut Voices for Children, a group I’ve supported even before twitter was around.
@WCGMemorialFund is the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund works collaboratively to improve education for CT's children. This is a new group to me and I look forward to learning more about them.
Together, all of us can work find ways of addressing health issues in our state, whether it be focusing on children, health disparities, on serving the underprivileged, or focusing on public health issues.
I really look forward to seeing what #hcsmct can do together.

Meme Night
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Thu, 09/29/2011 - 19:48Okay, so it's been a good evening for Internet Meme junkies. Starting off the list is the #congresshostage story. It started with a series of tweets from the most trusted name in online satire, The Onion
BREAKING: Witnesses reporting screams and gunfire heard inside Capitol building.
BREAKING: Capitol building being evacuated. 12 children held hostage by group of armed congressmen. #CongressHostage
Congress Takes Group Of Schoolchildren Hostagehttp://onion.com/r1pM9h #CongressHostage
Then, throughout the day, there were important updates.
Police helicopter just ordered to pull back after Rep. Trent Franks tried to take it down with a shotgun #CongressHostage
Two chaperones are also being held, one of whom is said to be pregnant #CongressHostage
Arlington gun shop confirms Rep. @EricCantor bought 6 semi-automatic handguns, 3 rifles & 600 clips of ammo last month #CongressHostage
BREAKING: Hostage sends camera phone video from inside Capitol building http://onion.com/qi7JK3 #CongressHostage
BREAKING: Congress demanding $12 trillion ransom or "all the kids die" #CongressHostage
Reports from those who know Congress say the legislative body had seemed desperate as of late #CongressHostage
Child with asthma released as gesture of good will #CongressHostage
Released child describes scene inside as “very scary,” with senators fighting over each state’s share of the ransom #CongressHostage
Three-course lunch from Charlie Palmer’s Steakhouse delivered as per Rep. Boehner’s demands #CongressHostage
Extra demands include transport to Dulles airport with fueled-up private jet waiting on runway. McCain expected to fly it. #CongressHostage

Obama on bullhorn: "John, I know you can hear me in there. Please, you don't need to do this." #CongressHostage
Obama: "I know this Congress well. Trust me, they will kill these kids." #CongressHostage
4pm deadline is in 15 minutes. Congress still has not received its $12 trillion #CongressHostage
UPDATE: Hostage Negotiation Talks Stall In Congress #CongressHostage http://onion.com/ozHsmU
There are probably inside jokes I'm missing, but I have to wonder if the three course lunch from a steakhouse was in response to Peter Shankman's tweet,
Hey @Mortons - can you meet me at newark airport with a porterhouse when I land in two hours? K, thanks. :)
This resulted in a steak being delivered along with a lot of earned media.
Of course the #CongressHostage crisis brought lots of interesting replies. Some people rolled with it pretty nicely
I knew #congresshostage was a joke as soon as I saw that it was a bipartisan effort. Those guys never work together.
Jonathan Swift should be ashamed for making jokes about eating children. #CongressHostageac
There was also @MASenScottBrown, with another long set of tweets about the events.
SHIT! FUCK SHIT! Larry Craig is guarding the bathroom doors on the 4th floor... I SHOULD OF KNOW! http://bit.ly/r3KxOY #CongressHostage
Okay moving into 3rd floor stair well, smells like coco butter... SHIT Boehner's coming! (hiding in 3rd floor closet) #CongressHostage
Of course when something like this happens, it can easily get out of hand and go meta.
When satire is too true... Capitol cops are responding to Onion report of Congress taking kids hostage #CongressHostagehttp://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/09/the-onion-roils-capitol-with-fictional-congress-perpetrated-hostage-situation.php
RT @michellemalkin: It’s Harry Reid who held up the latest short-term government funding band-aid, not Boehner. @TheOnion #congresshostage
@baratunde What are you thinking with #CongressHostage at@TheOnion? Where's the parody? Where's the funny? Nerves are a bit raw in DC now.
RT @acarvin: NYTimes: The Onion's Tweets Draw Scrutiny from Capitol Police http://nyti.ms/qjbbNI #congresshostage
Big Question (Answered): "Did the Onion Step Over the Line Today with the #CongressHostage Tweets" http://rww.to/ochL1h
It's funny. @SouthPark could've gotten away with an episode about #CongressHostage. @TheOnion tried it and got in trouble.
We'll also be providing a breaking update on #CongressHostage tonight and ask: Can our country still handle humor?
Thinking the real satire behind #CongressHostage is the response to it. Post 9/11, we've become a nation of feral cats.
It's the Onion's fault for not tweeting the word "Joke" 25 times before and after their #congressHostage tweet.
Too bad folks can't get as pissed at Congress for actually holding us hostage as they can at The Onion for joking about #CongressHostage
Okay. Enough. Let's move on to other memo's. Look at the Honey Badger, He’s Cracking Pistachios! [VIDEO] If you like Honey Badger and Pistachios, you'll like this video.
Finally, as I drove home, I saw a double rainbow, all the way! Check my Flickr photo stream for a few pictures.a
It's been a good evening for Internet Memes.

Random Stuff
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Tue, 09/27/2011 - 21:27Various computers have been running slowly today and I've been having assorted cellphone issues as well. I've been tired, perhaps fighting a low level cold. I've had a lot to get done, but I've been powering through.
With that, I don't have a lot to say right now. The Bridgeport Democratic Primary took place today, and the results are coming in. I attended the Government Access Television committee meeting this evening. I've been a bit more busy on Google+ over the past couple days. It seems like a lot of people have been playing with it over the past few days. One nice feature is that you can now share circles.
Meanwhile, I've come across two videos that are interesting. I learned of one during lunch and received the link on Twitter:
The other, I learned about on Facebook:

Online Anniversaries
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 19:17Last Thursday, September 22nd, I received a message from Foursquare letting me know that it was my second anniversary on their site. It was while I was at the Digiday conference on Social Media and that seemed somehow appropriate.
Last year, PodcampCT took place on the 4th anniversary of me being on Twitter, October 16th. This year, I will be in Rochester, MN on the day before a conference on Social Media and Healthcare starts on the 16th.
On Facebook, I installed Timeline last week, only to be told that today, September 26th, is my fifth anniversary on their site. Friends have expressed surprise that I've only been on Facebook for five years, but I point out that it was about five years ago that they finally opened up Facebook to people with email addresses other than at schools.
With all of this, I started looking around for other online firsts for myself that I could find. The earliest I could find was a Usenet post I put up on July 11, 1982. According to Lambda, I joined their MOO on 12/30/1994. On Jan 23, 2002, I joined Ecademy and the earliest blog post I can find there is from 8/21/2002.
Also 2002 is the earliest post I have on Livejournal, dating March 13, 2002. It was based on a discussion I had had on a different MOO.
Over on the political blogs, the earliest post I find on DailyKos was November 10, 2003. This is followed by a post on Greater Democracy on December 10, 2003. I suspect there are a bunch of other posts from that era that I can't find, which is partly prompted me to create Orient Lodge in 2004 as a repository for some of my writing.
There are plenty of other online anniversaries, but at least right now, these are probably the most significant.
