Updating CivicSpace Sites
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Fri, 07/29/2005 - 14:55When my wife ran for State Representative, I set up a domain, smartcampaigns.com where I could easily host many CivicSpace sites. Over time, it has gone from a handful of sites, mostly in Drupal 4.4 running on a couple different Windows 2000 servers with IIS in peoples houses to over three dozen sites running a collection of versions of CivicSpace on a resellers account at a reliable hosting service.
Part of my approach has been to use a shared directory for the files and a shared database. The shared database is accomplished using the db_prefix variable for CivicSpace. As a general rule, I set up one database for each shared directory. For example, I had one database for version for CivicSpace 0.8.0.1, another for CivicSpace 0.8.0.3, a third for CivicSpace 0.8.1 and then a few special databases. Each site was then set up with its own section for its files, including files for theme_editor. As a general rule, each site uses the box_grey theme, customized through theme_editor.
Playing with GeoURL
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Tue, 05/24/2005 - 09:26So, I'm trying to dig through the 800 emails that have piled up over the past week and a half. I'm not declaring email bankruptcy yet, but I'm close. I'm trying to get through the emails as quickly as possible, but some of them just require a little exploration.
Over at CivicSpace, there is a discussion about mapping users and developers. I've always liked playing with the ICBM and geo.position Meta tags. I use them to list my sites at www.a2b.cc.
Promoting sites and books
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Mon, 05/23/2005 - 14:39Today, I got an email by a writer from Iowa promoting his books. I haven’t read any of his books, but his email was well written and I would encourage you to check out his website, http://www.iowapeace.com/.
I also received an email from Strengthen the Good. Strengthen the Good highlights small charities that are not well known. I encourage every to read the Strengthen the Good blog, as well as read about The Tom Family.
Also, as a member of the Media Bloggers Association, I have received a review copy of Developing Feeds with RSS and Atom by Ben Hammersley.
Technology Stuff
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Tue, 05/03/2005 - 13:36Over the years, I've had several different blogs running several different programs on several different servers. Most of them are still up and running and you can read much of my old posts if you search around a little.
One blog I set up was running MovableType on a PC in my kitchen. It is also the PC that my daughter uses much of the time. Unfortunately, something causes the server to get stuck and she needs to reboot before the PC works reliably.
Yesterday, I spent some time trying to find out exactly what is causing the problem. As best as I can tell, the old MovableType blog gets stuck in a tight loop.
South Station WiFi Bubble

I fire up the laptop and check the WiFi connectivity. There are about half a dozen WiFi Access Points listed. Most of them are encrypted, however, there are two with strong signals that are open. The first is entitled something like publicwifi. It looks promising. I connect, to find that it isn't really all that public. It is public if you want to spend seven dollars an hour to access Wifi. I wonder how well they are doing with that. It doesn't seem to be part of any of the larger WiF vendor networks. To me, it isn't worth seven dollars. Would it have been worth two or three dollars? Maybe.
