In today’s New York Times, Robert Pear writes: “that four television networks had turned down its request to run an advertisement opposing President Bush's effort to clamp down on medical malpractice lawsuits.” He noted that the “networks said the advertisement violated their standards for advertising on controversial issues.”
By doing so, the fourth estate is failing its duties to promote public discourse about the issues that are most important to all Americans.

I love to watch the Super Bowl, not so much for the Football, I’m not a big Football fan, but more money goes into advertisements than into most creative endeavors. I’m also interested in the issues of how the media is regulated. Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction raises lots of interesting issues. Then, there is the issue of alternative distribution channels.

This makes me a WAHD, (Work at home Dad) today. I'm getting a few things done, but will need to be toddler taxi service shortly.

Bias and Ethics

The recent issues about Armstrong Williams’ dealing with the Department of Education has gotten many people to start talking a little more seriously about journalistic ethics, and this, I believe, is an unintended benefit. It seems as if too many journalists are far to distant from the ethics of their profession. Zephyr Teachout has extended this discussion to bloggers, and I feel that this is extremely important.

Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Tue, 01/04/2005 - 08:39While Mairead was visiting, I asked her how much she knew about what was going on with the tsunami relief efforts. For those of you who aren’t regular readers, Mairead is my exceptionally gifted fourteen-year-old daughter who is off in college. While I know that younger folk are now getting more of their news from the Internet and from the Daily Show, I was surprised at her answer. It wasn’t that she is getting her news from Google’s News site, or from blogs. She is getting it from discussion boards at NationStates “NationStates is a free nation simulation game. Build a nation and run it according to your own warped political ideals.” They have a bulletin board where they discuss the issues, that it where Mairead is getting her news.
